OUR MANIFESTO

For us, design never starts on a blank canvas.

We always react to existing building fabric or to possible pre-conceived ideas.

The drive behind our thinking is the belief that interior design
is the ideal medium to alter architecture.

Do you want to create a new design or
alter an existing building or interior?

Whether it be retail, residential or corporate design,
we will formulate a design strategy that will exceed your expectations.

Our design rationale

The architectural envelope only becomes accessible to the user if interaction with it is possible.

Such interaction may be visual, physical or even emotional.

At Black Canvas Architectural Interiors our aim is to facilitate this interaction
by utilising our specialised interior design background.

Our approach to architectural alterations focuses mainly on the interior environment,
and we alter the existing building envelope to bring about the appropriate changes.

SUCH ALTERATIONS USUALLY MANIFEST IN ONE OF THREE WAYS:

ADDITION
ADAPTATION
NEW WORK
  • By keeping the existing building envelope intact and only adding items – such as shopfitting or finishes – we are able to reinterpret the space through superficial intervention. These alterations tend to be less time consuming and more cost effective. A typical application for such an intervention is refurbishing a bathroom or creating a retail outlet in a shopping centre. ADDITION
  • By altering the built fabric to accommodate a new building element, adaptation is required. This type of intervention is more specialised, seeing that the architectural envelope has to be manipulated to accommodate the new item. A typical application of interior adaptation would be to increase a window opening to add more light, or to build a fireplace into an existing wall. ADAPTATION
  • As mentioned, the addition of new work to a space involves the adaptation of the existing space, but in this instance the new work added should react to the existing adaptation. An example of this type of intervention is the building of a walkway between two historic buildings, or adding a level to a building in order to create a vertical double volume. NEW-WORK

It may be argued that any interior alteration should involve a combination of more than one
of the three types mentioned above.

PROJECT PHASES

  • Phase 1:

    SITE ESTABLISHMENT

This is when we meet the client to discuss what work they would like done. We acquaint ourselves with the site by ensuring that all paperwork and information are in order before we start with the design.

  • Phase 2:

    CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

We provide the client with a basic “look and feel” of the project before the design commences; we convert the initial brief into a concept. The intention is to obtain as much client feedback during this phase as possible.

  • Phase 3:

    SPATIAL DESIGN

Information gathered from CONCEPTUALISING is now formalised and converted into a final product. We produce a set of drawings and 3D renderings that will give clients a visual appreciation for the project.

  • Phase 4:

    TECHNICAL DESIGN

This is the fine detailing phase of the project – all custom shopfitted items are detailed and resolved.

  • Phase 5:

    PROCUREMENT

This is the process where we manage your expectations: Our team ensures that you get a high quality product by managing the timing and quality aspects of each project.
